Social Media Analysis and Overall Findings
In general, companies that actively selling products to people are much more active on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest. On the other hand, companies tend to post much less frequently on Google+ and YouTube, but these revelations do not surprise at all. Fewer people probably have Google+ accounts than accounts on other social media websites, so they are less likely to visit Google+. In addition, Google+ appears to be a good platform for posting content and videos, but necessarily an effective platform for allowing commenters to leave responses. In general, it seems like consumers favor Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest a lot more than Google+ and YouTube because they know that their comments on those platforms are more likely to receive quick responses. Additionally, it seems like people enjoy leaving reviews and critiques of products that they use, so it is not surprising that platforms that combine the ability to post images, videos, and written commentary in the same place are more popular than platforms that tend to lack all of these factors.
YouTube does not seem to be a popular social media platform for companies to use, but that may be because people generally watch YouTube videos for entertainment or to obtain information about a variety of non-business topics. YouTube users sometimes resent having to watch commercials before visiting whatever videos they ant to watch, and companies like Burt’s Bees probably know that and therefore limit the number advertising videos they post on YouTube. Companies that use YouTube seem to simply be using it in order to make their names more well-known to users who otherwise would not have discovered them, but they do not delve into in-depth explanations about the wide variety of products they offer, their ingredients, or how those products can be incorporated into customers’ daily lives. In addition, companies that sell products seem to be shying away from Snapchat because they probably prefer that their advertisements last longer than 24 hours and remain online so that they continue to attract the attention of more customers.
